About RKUSI

Who We Are

The Royal Kingston United Services Institute (RKUSI) is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization. It is one of twenty-seven United Services Institutes in Canada patterned on the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies located at Whitehall in London. RKUSI is a member of the Conference of Defence Associations which is the national umbrella organization.

What We Do

RKUSI organizes expert speakers, conferences, and collaborates with like minded organizations within the Kingston area. We also encourage excellence within our local cadet corps and award a scholarship to a civilian RMC post graduate student annually. Through these initiatives, we leverage a network of experienced military and police practitioners, scholars, and concerned Canadians who are passionate and pragmatic in their approach to Canadian security and defence.

Our History

RKUSI was founded in 1925. Members are serving and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, CSIS, veterans of allied forces, and interested academics and civilians who support the objectives of the Institute. The Conference of Defence Associations was founded in 1932 and serves as an umbrella group for 40 member associations who represent over 400,000 active and retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces. In 1987, the CDA founded a separate Institute as a charitable organization with the mission to advance informed debate on national security issues.

Vision

The Royal Kingston United Services Institute (RKUSI) strives to be a credible, independent, and collaborative organization which fosters informed debate and education related to Canadian national security and defence issues within the wider Kingston geographic area.
