The Prize exists to encourage original, well-argued writing on Canadian and international defence and security issues; foster engagement between the academic and military communities of Eastern Ontario, in keeping with RKUSI’s mandate; and recognize and reward excellence in analytical writing among graduate students enrolled in programs exploring Canadian defence and security issues

Call for Papers
This competition, known as “The James Howden MacBrien Prize” (the “Prize”), is administered by the Royal Kingston United Services Institute (“RKUSI”) under the authority of the RKUSI Executive. This call for papers sets out the dedication, aim, eligibility, rules, judging arrangements and administration of the Prize, and supersedes any previous arrangements for an RKUSI essay competition.
Cadet Corps
The RKUSI Cadet Corps coordinator is Gary Coulter who can be reached at cadets@rkusi.org. It may also be possible to award a grant to a Cadet Corps who makes a request for support financial or otherwise.
Naval and Officer Cadets from the 2023 Indigenous Leadership Opportunity Year (ILOY) attend their Completion Ceremony at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, marking the beginning of their career with the Canadian Armed Forces, on June 21, 2023.
The ILOY program is a year-long program through which members of the Indigenous community apply to become Naval Officers and Officers in the CAF.
